Frequently asked questions

Will compressing reduce the quality of my PDF?

Some — compression works mainly by re-encoding embedded images at a lower quality. Text stays crisp at any setting. Use “Less compression” if the PDF is mostly text or line art, and “Extreme” only when file size matters more than image sharpness.

What's the difference between the compression levels?

Less compression keeps images near full quality for the smallest size reduction; Recommended is a balanced middle ground good for most documents; Extreme compresses images aggressively for the smallest possible file, which can visibly soften photos.

Why didn't my file get much smaller?

PDFs that are already mostly text, or that were exported at a low resolution already, won't shrink much further — there's simply not much redundant image data left to compress.

Is Compress PDF free to use?

Yes — Compress PDF is free to use. It runs on our servers, so the Free plan includes a daily allowance; Premium removes the limits and raises the file-size cap.

Are my files uploaded or stored anywhere?

Your file is sent over an encrypted connection, processed, and automatically deleted from our servers shortly after — typically within an hour. We never read, share or keep your documents.

Do I need to install anything or create an account?

Nothing to install — everything happens online. You'll need a free account so we can queue your job and keep your result private to you.
